The San Diego Botanic Garden is a nonprofit organization founded in 1970 that sits on 37 acres in Encinitas, in north San Diego County, and operates as a public plant science institution. Its living collections span more than 5,000 plant species across 15 regional gardens and 12 demonstration gardens, and it hosts North America's largest public bamboo collection; the grounds also include three children’s gardens, including the flagship Hamilton Children’s Garden. The garden emphasizes botany, conservation horticulture, and applied plant sciences to address issues from food security to climate resilience, collaborating with local academics and other partners to develop programs and share knowledge. Its audience includes visitors, students, researchers, and conservation partners who engage with education, outreach, and hands-on experiences that connect people with plants. In 2024, it announced the third edition of Lightscape, signaling ongoing program expansion.
