Self-Help for the Elderly is a private, community-based non-profit organization founded in 1966 and based in San Francisco. Its mission is to promote independence, dignity, and self-worth among seniors by helping them help themselves and by offering a broad, multicultural and multilingual set of services. Each year, it provides health care and social services to more than 40,000 seniors and disabled adults across its city footprint and the surrounding counties of San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Alameda. Direct service staff are bilingual in at least one of these languages, and are bicultural where relevant, enabling culturally competent care. The organization has a history of employing and providing housekeeping services and related job training, alongside a broad array of social services including home health care, in-home care, hospice care, and adult day care. Its programs serve San Francisco neighborhoods such as the Richmond and Sunset districts, Chinatown, Nob Hill, Mission, Marina, and Hayes Valley, and extend across San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Alameda counties.
