The Society for Neuroscience is the world's largest organization of scientists and physicians devoted to understanding the brain and nervous system, operating as a membership-based nonprofit. It has grown from 500 members in 1969 to nearly 35,000 across more than 80 countries, and it advances scientific exchange through its annual meeting and its publications eNeuro and The Journal of Neuroscience. It supports the neuroscience community with professional development programming and public information and outreach. Based in Washington, District of Columbia, SfN operates as a mid-sized nonprofit organization serving scientists and physicians globally. In November 2025, the society announced the appointment of Kevin B. Marvel, PhD, as Executive Director, with the role taking effect March 16, 2026. It advocates for policies that advance science and improve health, including strong national investments in research and the responsible use of animals in research.
