STAIR (Start The Adventure In Reading) of Birmingham is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping 1st–3rd grade students become confident, lifelong readers. Through free, one-on-one after-school tutoring, STAIR pairs trained volunteers with students across 14 Birmingham-area schools.

Using an evidence-based curriculum developed by educators and literacy specialists, STAIR focuses on building the foundational reading skills children need to thrive in school and beyond.

Founded in 2000 with just a few students at Avondale Elementary, STAIR now serves nearly 200 students each year with the support of over 350 volunteers. Together with local schools, partners, and community members, we’re helping Birmingham’s children unlock their full potential—one session, one page, one reader at a time.
