Surry-Yadkin Electric Membership Corporation was founded in 1940, by a diverse group of men and women who saw the need to bring electricity to rural areas in Northwest North Carolina. The first loan of $250,000 was made from the Rural Electrification Administration and used to build 200 miles of distribution line and the Mt. Airy Substation to serve 750 members in Surry, Yadkin, Stokes and Forsyth counties. Services were later added to Wilkes county. Currently Surry-Yadkin EMC serves approximately 27,000 accounts and maintains 4,000 miles of line. Surry-Yadkin Electric Membership Corporation is dedicated to providing safe, affordable, reliable energy to its member-owners. The cooperative is governed by a set of bylaws were adopted in 1940, and have since been amended to meet the changing needs of its member-owners.
