In 1961, President Kennedy said to the American people: “We choose to go to the moon and do these other things not because they are easy, but because they are hard. I believe this nation should commit itself [to achieve] a goal of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to earth.”

When President Kennedy said America would put a man on the moon, most of us believed him. We didn't know how, exactly, but we had faith in his vision and most of us made it our vision as well. Eight years later, on July 20, 1969, Commander Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the surface of the moon.
