The T.W. Lewis Company began in the Phoenix area as a multi-family homebuilder and manager, founded in 1991 after Tom Lewis bought out his partner’s interest in Trammell Crow Homes. It earned a reputation for quality and customer satisfaction, receiving national honors such as America’s Best Builder in 1998 and the National Housing Quality Gold Award in 2009. In 2012 the company exited traditional homebuilding, selling that portion to David Weekley Homes and continuing as a partner in Phoenix through 2016; since then it has focused on philanthropy, luxury leasing and sales, and other real estate investments. Formed in 2000 by Tom and Jan Lewis, the T.W. Lewis Foundation operates to improve quality of life by supporting non-profits that assist children and families, build character, and encourage civic engagement in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The foundation and its philanthropic activities emphasize integrity, quality, and long-term relationships across investments. The organization is based in Scottsdale, Arizona, and maintains a modest-sized team. In 2023 the foundation appointed Steve Smith, a former Arizona senator, as executive director.
