The United States Department of the Army is a federal government department within the Department of Defense responsible for organizing the United States Army. It is led by a civilian Secretary of the Army, appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate, and operates under statutory authority to conduct its affairs and prescribe regulations, subject to the law and the directions of the President and the Secretary of Defense. The department’s senior leadership includes the Chief of Staff of the Army, who is the highest-ranking military officer and a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, along with the Under Secretary of the Army and the Vice Chief of Staff. Its headquarters are in Arlington, Virginia. Originating as the Department of War in 1789, its current form was established after the 1947 reorganizations under the National Security Act and related amendments in 1949. Based in the Arlington area, the department employs thousands of personnel to administer Army organization and governance within the federal system.
