Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) is a UK-based pension scheme established in 1974 to serve universities and higher education institutions. Based in Liverpool, it collaborates with around 330 employers to provide retirement security for nearly 577,000 members and their families. It is one of the largest pension schemes in the UK, with assets of about £76.8 billion as of 31 March 2025. Most of USS’s assets are managed in-house by USS Investment Management Limited, which oversees a large portion of the portfolio, including about £26 billion in private market investments. The scheme operates as a long-term, responsible investor with a legal duty to act in the best financial interests of its members, incorporating financially material ESG factors into investment decisions and engaging as active, long-term owners. In 2026 USS partnered with Nurole to recruit a Non-Executive Director and Chair of the Group Audit & Risk Committee.
