Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) is the UK’s largest pension scheme by assets, with £77.9bn under management (31 March 2024), dedicated to providing retirement benefits to more than 550,000 members across 330 institutions in the higher education sector. USS was established in 1974, a corporate trustee responsible for administering both defined (DB) and other benefits and defined contributions (DC) pensions. It has offices in Liverpool and London. Our dedicated in-house investment team, USS Investment Management Limited, manages the majority of USS’ assets – including c.£25bn in private market investments. At USS we integrate environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) factors into our investment decisions across all asset classes. Through engagement, voting and stewardship, we use our influence as a major institutional investor to promote good ESG practices.
