Based in Tehran, Iran, the University of Tehran is a historic flagship institution in the country’s higher education system, tracing its origins from a traditional religious school to a modern university. It spans 39 faculties and 120 departments, offering nearly a thousand programs across 500 fields, and sustains a broad research ecosystem with more than 40 centers, 3,500 laboratories, and a leading press publishing over 50 peer-reviewed journals. A substantial body of tenured faculty underpins its teaching and research, and roughly 15% of Iran’s Centers of Excellence are affiliated with the university.

The university operates campuses in Tehran as well as in Qom, Karaj, Kish, and Jolfa, serving students and researchers across a broad regional footprint. In 2024 it expanded its program offerings with the launch of a major in Saudi studies to address contemporary international topics.
