WTVI PBS Charlotte has served citizens in the Central Piedmont since it signed on the air on August 27, 1965. First licensed to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, the license was transferred to an agency created by the school system and Mecklenburg County — the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Broadcasting Authority in 1981. The Federal Communications license was transferred to Central Piedmont Community College in July 2012.
