Making mornings since 1927. Our story begins four generations ago when Joseph Zaro carried Jewish baking traditions from Lublin, Poland to Ellis Island and, eventually, to the store he opened in the Bronx in 1927. We stand for New York classics like handmade bagels, challah, chocolate babka, and cakes that taste like childhood. More than 70,000 New Yorkers start their morning with us on a weekly basis. We sell over 1 million cups of coffee, 1.5 million bagels, 250,000 black and white cookies, and 100,000 loaves of challah annually. All of our family recipes are made from scratch and certified Kosher (OK Kosher) at our main bakery in the Bronx. You can find our great-grandsons behind the counter, assisting in schmear decisions or unloading boxes of rugelach. We welcome new faces every day, for those looking for something sweet, wholesome and that iconic New York bakery experience. Babka, danishes, and pastries have traveled with millions of families since we opened the store in Grand Central Terminal 40 years ago. In transportation hubs like Grand Central Terminal, New York Penn Station, Newark Penn Station, busy commuters seek us out for breakfast, lunch, and snacks because we are — in their words —New York.
