Cancer research has been directly and dramatically empowered by advances in genetic sequencing technology, however enormous challenges still remain. Recently discovered cancer DNA markers are already saving thousands of lives but a more exact understanding of cancer mutations is one of the keys to eradicating this dreadful disease. The scientific approach and limitations in the present DNA sequencing systems are a major impediment for new discoveries. ZS Genetics is creating a new and pivotal technology that will dramatically improve the rate of discovery and reduce the time-to-market of cancer treatments and cures. Current sequencing methods are fast and efficient, but they require chopping DNA into pieces that are difficult to reassemble and understand. Many types of important disease-related information simply cannot be identified with short molecule sequencing. Even with the latest systems, researchers are still limited to reading a few hundred base pairs at a time to collect reasonably accurate information. Scientists are in desperate need of a better solution which will require a fundamental change to a new, more capable and more exact technology. The ZS Genetics sequencer will read DNA molecules 500 times longer than today’s best short read technologies. The ability to accurately read very long DNA molecules will power the next wave of genetic analysis and cancer research.
