The BIG EAST Conference is a collegiate athletic organization within the spectator sports industry, based in New York City. It began in 1979 as a seven-school alliance led by Providence College’s Dave Gavitt, bringing together Providence, St. John’s, Georgetown, Syracuse, Seton Hall, Connecticut, and Boston College. Its current membership includes Butler, Creighton, DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, St. John’s, Seton Hall, Villanova, and Xavier. The member institutions are located in seven of the nation’s top media markets, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Indianapolis, Milwaukee, and Cincinnati. 

The conference has a history of promoting and publicizing its events through television, which has yielded notable visibility for both the league and its student-athletes. It also emphasizes academic integrity and the graduation success of its student-athletes. In June 2026, the BIG EAST, together with DePaul University, hosted its seventh Student-Athlete Well-Being Forum on DePaul’s campus to address mental wellness among student-athletes, coaches, and administrators.
