Founded in 1962, the East Central Florida Regional Planning Council is a public, non-profit agency created as one of Florida's regional planning councils under Chapter 186. It serves eight counties—Brevard, Lake, Marion, Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Sumter, and Volusia—assisting public, private, and institutional sectors with regional-scale issues. Its work centers on identifying and addressing regional challenges through communication and collaboration to develop strategies for a healthy, sustainable, thriving, and resilient region. Based in Orlando, the organization coordinates across four major metropolitan areas, 78 cities, and a population approaching 4.5 million. It maintains ongoing partnerships, including a long-running collaboration with Florida Sea Grant to support legal and policy research, trainings, and outreach for communities on Florida's east central coast. In early 2026, the council participated in the East Central Florida Diamond Awards and presented the Brilliance Award to recognize the Save Its Indian River Lagoon program.
