Humane Society University (HSU) is a private, non-profit institution offering a variety of online, classroom, and hybrid undergraduate degree, graduate certificate and professional development programs in human-animal studies. HSU is comprised of three parts: the School of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Professional Studies, and The Center for Organizational Effectiveness in Human Capital Development. Based in Washington, D.C., HSU’s School of Arts and Sciences is the first higher education institution in the country licensed to provide Bachelor of Science degrees and Graduate Certificates in Animal Studies, Animal Policy and Advocacy, and Humane Leadership. Coursework is taught in online, hybrid, and traditional classroom formats. October 2010 will mark the School of Arts and Sciences’ one year anniversary. Currently the school has over 130 accepted students and is continuing work towards accreditation. HSU’s Department of Professional Studies offers nearly sixty specialized courses available online, or instructed locally throughout the United States. Topics covered include: animals in disasters, animal fighting investigations, mastering animal sheltering basics, and confronting compassion fatigue. Thousands of students have been educated through the Department of Professional Studies. The Center for Organizational Effectiveness in Human Capital Development’s mission is to work in partnership with organizations in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors to maximize their effectiveness. The Center provides approved HRCI (Human Resource Certification Institute) courses for PHR, SPHR, and GPHR individuals, leadership development courses, sales training courses, and interpersonal skills and self-development courses.
