The Mazamas is a small nonprofit organization based in Portland, Oregon, founded in 1894 on Mt. Hood to advance climbing education, leadership, and conservation in the Pacific Northwest. As a 501(c)(3) entity, it offers education programs, guided climbs and hikes, stewardship activities, and scientific research, supported by more than 300 volunteers and a membership of about 3,000 individuals. The organization operates two facilities, including the carbon-neutral Mazama Mountaineering Center in Southeast Portland and the Mazama Lodge in Government Camp. Its activities are aimed at people who engage in mountaineering education and related outdoor programs, delivering instruction and conservation work through a community-driven model. In September 2024, Mazamas announced a partnership with the Oregon Symphony to explore the intersection of climbing, nature, and music, illustrating a collaborative approach to community engagement.
