MOTTO was a United States-based dating platform in the technology, information, and internet sector that launched in the cities of Miami and New York. It introduced a verification system for user profiles to address safety concerns and discrimination prevalent in earlier gay dating apps, aiming to curb impersonation and toxic behavior enabled by anonymity. By redesigning interactions to emphasize intentional, real-life-style connections, the service sought to reduce aimless small talk and replace anonymous chats with more meaningful engagement. The platform operated for roughly two years, growing to tens of thousands of members and enabling numerous dates and connections. Growth did not reach the scale of larger apps like Grindr and Hinge, and MOTTO wound down in August 2024.
