Founded in 1986, the National Academy of Social Insurance has served as a national leader in social insurance policy. It operates as a think tank focused on safeguarding, strengthening, and updating the United States’ social insurance system. The organization draws together a membership of nearly 1,300 experts to address emerging challenges and study how programs affecting workers, families, employers, and the economy can adapt over time. Its scope spans Social Security, Medicare, workers’ compensation, unemployment insurance, and related public programs such as SSI, Medicaid, SNAP, TANF, and the ACA, illustrating their protective role and impact on economic stability. Through research and analysis, the Academy educates policymakers and policy influencers, including the media, and aims to shape public debate while nurturing a robust community and a diverse pipeline of future social insurance leaders. Based in Washington, D.C., the organization engages in activities such as its annual Policy Summit; the 2026 event is planned for February at the National Press Club.
