The National Rural Water Association (NRWA) functions as the national membership body for rural water and wastewater utilities, operating through its affiliated State Rural Water Associations. It represents more than 31,000 utility members across the country and provides training, technical assistance, and source water protection services to rural and small systems. These activities are supported by Congress and carried out in partnership with agencies including USDA Rural Development, the Farm Service Agency, and the Environmental Protection Agency, with NRWA also representing utilities in regulatory and legislative matters.

NRWA administers certification, online training, and continuing education through its WaterPro Academy, and it hosts the WaterPro Conference while maintaining an online community for water professionals. Based in Duncan, Oklahoma, the organization describes itself as a mid-sized national association, and in May 2026 it announced a five-year contract with USDA Rural Development to operate the Circuit Rider Technical Assistance Program.
