The New York Power Authority is a state public power authority based in White Plains, New York, founded in 1931. It is the largest of its kind in the United States and generates about a quarter of New York State's electricity while operating roughly one-third of the state's transmission lines. More than 80 percent of its output comes from hydroelectric sources, aligning with efforts toward a sustainable energy future. As a public entity governed by New York State, NYPA oversees generation and storage, statewide transmission, customer services and partnerships, and the New York State Canal Corporation as a subsidiary. The organization operates within the utilities sector to advance a carbon-free and resilient energy system for New York, expanding renewable capacity and pursuing advanced nuclear energy development. In recent developments, NYPA partnered with Ontario Power Generation to advance state-of-the-art nuclear generation intended to supply power to upstate data centers and semiconductor manufacturers.
