PIARCS is advancing two synergistic innovations - algal pond design and bacterial phosphorus sequestration - to promote sustainable development and environmental restoration. Algal biomass, powered by PIARCS dark-adapted reactor design, could supplant fossil fuel feedstocks while promoting carbon sequestration. The target pond productivity of 96 tons/acre/year – 16 times higher than corn – would meet current U.S. oil consumption by covering less than 3% of the continental U.S. Deinococcus bacteria, activated by PIARCS' proprietary molecules, could establish a sustainable phosphorus fertilizer cycle while restoring polluted ecosystems. In just 20 minutes contact time, these bacteria can accumulate phosphorus up to 41% of their dry weight - surpassing the 13% found in high-grade rock phosphate - while reducing water phosphorus levels to below 30 ppb.
