In 1942, Fernando van Zeller Guedes and partners, founded “Sociedade Comercial dos Grandes Vinhos de Mesa de Portugal” ( now known as SOGRAPE Vinhos S.A.) and created what would eventually become the most famous Portuguese table wine – MATEUS ROSÉ. Sogrape’s ambition was for Portuguese wines to be known all over the world, with three main criteria: the quality of the wines, the importance of brands and the presentation of its wines. Sogrape Vinhos is the biggest wine company in Portugal and one of the top companies worldwide. In the light wine business has brands like Mateus Rosé, Gazela, Grão Vasco, Casa Ferreirinha, Quinta dos Carvalhais, Herdade do Peso, ranging from the internationally most well known brand - Mateus Rosé - to the most iconic Portuguese wine brand - Barca Velha. In the branded Port wine business, Sogrape is market leader with the Ferreira, Offley and Sandeman brands. In the Vino de Jerez (Sherry) industry the company leads the German market with Sandeman brand as well. This company operates in more than 120 markets, being Portugal, Spain, UK, Holland, Belgium, USA, Canada and Japan the most important ones. The company turnover is 180 million € and it has around 600 employees. The business is integrated, the company is involved in winegrowing as well as the wine production, bottling and selling.
