St. Louis County is a government administration entity that serves the residents of Missouri and is the state’s most populous county, with a population of over one million. Geographically, it sits near the eastern edge of Missouri and is bordered by the city of St. Louis and the Mississippi River to the east, the Missouri River to the north, and the Meramec River to the south; the county's headquarters are in Clayton, Missouri. The county government employs between 1,001 and 5,000 people. The government operates with an executive branch, headed by the St. Louis County Executive, and a seven-member County Council that serves as the legislative body; the current county executive is Dr. Sam Page, inaugurated in 2019. The county has more than 600,000 jobs and maintains a broad set of public services and facilities, including over 70 county-managed parks, three state parks, a portion of a national wildlife refuge, and an education ecosystem comprising 24 school districts, private schools, a unified public library system, municipal libraries, and several colleges and universities.
