Stars and Stripes is a newspaper publishing company based in Washington, D.C., that serves the U.S. military community with independent news and information, including active-duty servicemembers, DoD civilians, contractors, and their families. It is unique among DoD-authorized outlets for guaranteed First Amendment privileges that are subject to Congressional oversight. The organization has published a newspaper continuously since World War II, and online publication began in 1999, today operating as a multimedia news organization. Its print edition runs Monday through Thursday, with a Friday Weekend Edition for Europe and Pacific and a Friday–Sunday Mideast edition, along with several weekly and monthly publications and special supplements. Stars and Stripes maintains news bureaus in Europe, the Pacific, and the Middle East, serves about 300,000 average daily readers, and employs between 201 and 500 people.
