The Texas Medical Association is a professional organization in the hospitals and health care sector based in Austin, Texas. Founded in 1853 by 35 physicians to serve Texans in medical care, disease prevention, and public health improvement, it has evolved into a broad membership body. Today, more than 60,000 physician and medical student members belong to TMA, making it the largest state medical society in the United States. The association's mission centers on improving the health of all Texans, supported by policy work and advocacy related to medical practice and public health. A notable recent development was the April 18, 2026 TexMed conference in Corpus Christi, where Dr. Bradford Holland was sworn in as the organization's 161st president; this followed his prior role as president-elect. TMA has also engaged in collaborations with the Texas Hospital Association to guide state policy on life-of-the-mother care.
