The Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) is a Washington, D.C.-based trade association that represents the dietary supplement and functional food sector, including manufacturers and ingredient suppliers. Founded in 1973, it coordinates a membership of more than 150 companies that manufacture dietary ingredients or supplements and support related services. These member companies contribute to a large share of the dietary supplements marketed in the United States and globally, across national brands, store brands, natural food stores, and direct selling channels. Members are expected to comply with federal and state regulations governing manufacturing, marketing, quality control, and safety, and to adhere to voluntary guidelines and CRN’s Code of Ethics. Beyond regulatory work, CRN runs initiatives such as the CRN Foundation's Access Initiative to address nutritional gaps in underserved communities in partnership with NAFC. It also conducts educational and scientific programming, including SciComms Connect and events highlighting prenatal nutrition at professional meetings like ACOG.
